Invisalign or Mail Order?
What you get, and what you don't, when aligners arrive by post instead of through a dentist's chair, and the checks worth making before you pay for either.
Is It Safe to Straighten Teeth with Aligners by Post?
It can work for small corrections, but you lose the checks that keep treatment safe. Invisalign at a practice starts with an in-person examination and X-rays, uses attachments bonded to the teeth, and is checked face to face every six to eight weeks, while most mail-order aligners are planned remotely from an impression or photos. In Hamilton, Invisalign starts from £2,500 with refinements, Vivera retainers and whitening included, after a free consultation.
What Actually Differs
Both approaches use clear trays that press teeth into new positions, and the bone responds to them in exactly the same way. The gap between them lies in everything that happens before, during and after the trays.
| Feature | Invisalign at our practice | Typical mail-order aligners |
|---|---|---|
| Dentist examines you in person | Yes, before planning | Rarely |
| X-rays of roots and bone | Yes | Usually none |
| How your teeth are recorded | iTero Lumina scan in the chair | Putty kit at home, or a scan at a shop |
| Attachments for grip | Bonded where needed | Generally not possible |
| Progress checks | In person every 6 to 8 weeks | Photos or app, if at all |
| Retainers | Vivera, included | Depends on the company |
What an Examination Catches
Moving teeth is a medical procedure, so what's going on under the gum matters as much as what you see in the mirror. If you have gum disease, pushing teeth through inflamed bone can speed up bone loss. A small hole left for a year under a tray can turn into a root canal. Short roots, an old crown that's failing, or a bite that already overloads certain teeth all change what can be safely done.
None of that shows up on a selfie or a putty mould. At a free consultation in Hamilton, Dr Nikhil Sharma examines your teeth and gums and checks X-rays before anything is planned, and anything that needs treating first is flagged at that visit.

Planning, Scanning and Grip
Every tray has to match your teeth closely, so the starting record matters. Our iTero Lumina records your teeth and gums in 3D in a matter of minutes, putty-free, and the plan is drawn on that. A home impression kit relies on you getting a clean mould of your own teeth over the kitchen sink. Small errors there mean trays that don't seat properly.
Then there's grip. Many movements, such as turning a tooth or lifting one into line, need small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to the enamel. Occasionally a sliver is polished from between teeth to create room. Both need a dentist in the room, so remote treatment is usually limited to simpler tipping movements. That's a large part of why some mail-order cases stall before the finish line.
Checks Along the Way
Here, reviews are roughly every six to eight weeks. We look at whether each tooth is keeping up with the plan, whether attachments are intact and how your gums are coping, then hand over your next trays. A tooth that's lagging is spotted at the next visit, not at the end. If you need extra aligners to perfect the result, those refinements are already in your package.
A photo sent through an app can show some things. It can't tell whether a tray is fully seated, how your back teeth now meet, or that a gum is starting to recede.
When Things Go Wrong
If a tray splits, a tooth refuses to budge or your bite suddenly feels wrong, you want someone you can sit in front of. At a practice, the dentist who planned your treatment is responsible for it from start to finish and can change course.
With a mail-order company, support depends entirely on that company. One of the biggest operators in the market shut down in 2023, leaving customers part-way through treatment with no further trays and no retainers. Because aligners are made to one specific plan, another provider can't simply carry it on, so most of those people needed a fresh assessment and a new course.
Comparing the Real Cost
Invisalign at our practice costs between £2,500 (Express) and £5,000 (Comprehensive Plus), and the package is set by the amount of movement in your plan. 1 That covers the examination, scans and X-rays, all aligners, refinements, Vivera retainers, home whitening and a hygiene visit, fixed in writing. The Invisalign cost guide sets out all five.
A mail-order quote often looks lower. Before comparing, add back what may be missing: an examination and X-rays, extra trays if the first series falls short, retainers, and any treatment needed if a problem is found late.
Already Part-Way Through?
If you've started with a remote company and you're worried, sore, or your teeth seem stuck, book a free consultation and bring whatever paperwork or app screenshots you have. Dr Sharma will check your gums and teeth, scan them and explain plainly where you are. We can't continue another provider's trays, so any next step means a new plan. If a lot of the movement has already happened, that plan may be shorter than you'd expect.
Please don't simply stop wearing the trays and hope for the best. Partly moved teeth can leave your bite uneven, and without retainers they'll drift. Even if you decide to do nothing more, you'll leave knowing the health of your teeth and gums. Our adult Invisalign guide explains what treatment here involves.
