Guards That Fit Well Enough to Wear
A custom night guard for grinding costs £210 at our Hamilton practice, and a fitted sports mouthguard is £190. Each one is made from a 3D scan of your teeth on our iTero Lumina scanner, so there's no putty, and it's thin and snug enough that you'll keep it in.Night guards £210 and sports guards £190 in Hamilton, made from a 3D scan of your teeth.
Splints for jaw pain cost from £620, and devices for snoring from £620. Dental plan members pay 10% less. 1
Choosing the Right Appliance
They look alike in the box but do different jobs. We'll recommend one after looking at your teeth, bite and jaw.
Sports Mouthguard
Made to your teeth for contact sports: rugby, hockey and football, plus boxing, judo and other martial arts. Because it fits closely you can talk and breathe with it in, so it actually gets worn at training (£190).
Night Guard
A thin, clear guard worn while you sleep. It soaks up the force of clenching and grinding and protects your teeth and any crowns, veneers or bonding (£210).
Hard Occlusal Splint
A rigid acrylic splint, fine-tuned over a few visits so your bite meets it evenly. For heavy grinding, marked wear or a painful jaw (from £620).
Anti-Snoring Device
Two linked trays that hold the lower jaw a little forward while you sleep, keeping the airway clearer for simple snoring (from £620).
Retainers
Clear Essix retainers to stop straightened teeth drifting back (£214 for one arch). Vivera retainers come with every Invisalign course.
Guarding Your Dental Work
If you grind, bonding, veneers, crowns and implant teeth all chip and wear faster. A guard at night is cheap insurance.
Could You Be a Grinder?
Most grinding happens in sleep, so people rarely know they do it. These clues are more reliable.
From Scan to Fit
A Look at Your Teeth and Jaw
We check for wear, cracks and strain in the jaw muscles and joints, and make sure nothing else needs fixing first, such as a broken filling or a tooth that sits high.
A Quick 3D Scan
The iTero Lumina scanner records both arches in a few minutes. A dental laboratory makes the appliance from that file.
Fitting
When it comes back from the laboratory, we seat it, check it doesn't rock or pinch, and adjust it so your teeth land evenly on it.
A Short Follow-Up
We see you again after a few weeks of wear to check it's comfortable and doing its job.
Chemist Guard or Custom-Made?
A mouldable guard from the chemist is fine as a stopgap. The trouble is that it's thick and loose, so it tends to end up in a drawer within a few weeks, and a guard does nothing out of your mouth. A custom one is slimmer, grips the teeth properly and is adjusted to your bite.
To be clear about what a night guard does: it shields your teeth, but it won't stop the habit. If stress, poor sleep or a jaw joint problem is behind it, we'll say so and point you to help. For jaw pain or severe wear, a hard splint adjusted over several visits is usually the next step. See our jaw pain page for more.
An anti-snoring device is for plain snoring. If you stop breathing in your sleep, wake up gasping or nod off during the day, that can be sleep apnoea. See your GP first; a dental device may then form part of the treatment they arrange.

Protect Your Teeth Before They Wear
A dental examination will show if grinding is wearing your teeth down, and which appliance would help. The scan itself takes only a few minutes.
