Gum Disease Treatment, Hamilton
Bleeding Gums, Brought Under Control
Gum disease is treated at our Hamilton practice by Simra Ashraf, our dental hygienist. She measures every pocket, cleans below the gum in planned stages at £100 a stage, and then helps you keep it stable. Caught early, it's often sorted with one deep clean (£130).Simra Ashraf, our hygienist, measures your gums and treats gum disease in stages, at £100 a stage.
Usually four stages. Hygiene visits are included in both dental plans, and plan members pay 10% less for the deep clean and each gum treatment stage. 1
Warning Signs to Take Seriously
Gum disease seldom hurts until late on, which is exactly why so many people miss it.
Blood on the Toothbrush
Healthy gum doesn't bleed when you brush. If it does, that's inflammation, and brushing more softly won't fix it.
A Taste or Smell You Can't Shift
The bacteria living under the gum line cause it. Mouthwash covers it up for an hour or so.
Gums Shrinking Back
Teeth look longer than they used to, and the exposed root at the neck of the tooth can feel sensitive.
Puffy or Dark Red Gum Edges
Gum that's swollen or shiny along the margin, often tender when you floss.
Teeth That Move
Front teeth fanning out, a new gap, or a tooth that feels slightly loose when you bite.
Linked Health Problems
Research ties gum disease to diabetes and heart disease. Inflamed gums also make blood sugar harder to manage, and implants harder to keep healthy.
Two Stages of the Same Problem
Plaque sitting at the gum line causes both. What differs is how deep it has got.
The Treatment Plan
Measure and Record
Simra charts the gum around every tooth, and X-rays show how much bone support you have. You go home with a clear picture of where things stand and a written fee.
Clean and Coach
A thorough clean with Airflow to lift stain and soft plaque, then scaling to remove tartar. She'll show you, in your own mouth, which interdental brush sizes fit and where you're missing.
Stage by Stage Below the Gum
If you have periodontitis, the roots are cleaned deep inside each pocket under local anaesthetic, one quarter of the mouth per visit, usually across four visits.
Re-Check, Then Maintain
About three months later the pockets are measured again. From then on, hygiene visits every three months stop the disease creeping back.
Why It's Worth the Effort
Among adults, gum disease takes more teeth than decay does, yet most of it can be prevented. Gingivitis treated now disappears. Periodontitis treated now won't give back lost bone, but it can be halted and the teeth kept, often for the rest of your life.
It also decides what else we can do safely. An implant placed in an inflamed mouth is far more likely to fail, a bridge is only as sound as the teeth holding it, and aligners shouldn't move teeth through active gum disease. So at our practice in Hamilton, gum health is sorted first, before any cosmetic or implant work.
Hygiene visits are part of both dental plans (Plan A £24.10 and Plan B £40.16 a month). Plan B covers four visits a year, which suits anyone on three-monthly maintenance.
