Invisalign for Adults
A plain account of what clear aligners do well for grown-up teeth, where they fall short, what an ordinary day in them looks like, and what you'd pay in Hamilton.
Can Adults Get Invisalign in Hamilton?
Yes. Age doesn't stop teeth moving, so most adults with crowding, gaps or teeth that have crept since school braces can be treated with Invisalign, provided their gums are healthy. In Hamilton, Dr Nikhil Sharma plans every case from an iTero scan, and treatment starts from £2,500 with refinements, Vivera retainers and whitening in the fee. You wear the aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, usually for somewhere between six months and a year and a half.
Is There an Age Limit?
No. The bone that holds your teeth is living tissue, and it keeps rebuilding itself for as long as you live. That is what lets a tooth move at 45 just as it would at 15. Press steadily on one side of a root and the bone there slowly gives way, while fresh bone is laid down behind it. An aligner applies that pressure in tiny, planned steps.
What decides if you're suitable is the health of your gums, how much bone supports each root, and whether you'll genuinely keep the aligners in. Plenty of people start in their forties, fifties or later.
Why Adults Usually Ask
Most adults who enquire about Invisalign fall into one of three groups.
- Braces as a teenager, and the teeth have slipped. Usually the lower front teeth, often because the retainer went in a drawer years ago. This tends to be a short, simple course.
- Crowding that keeps getting worse. Lower teeth in particular bunch up with age, which also makes them harder to clean.
- A gap or a twisted tooth you've never liked. A space between the front teeth, or one tooth turned out of line, that shows in every photo.
Aligners also handle mild to moderate bite problems: a deep overbite, a small underbite, or a crossbite where a few upper teeth sit inside the lower ones.

When Aligners Aren't the Answer
Some problems sit in the jaws rather than the teeth. If your lower jaw is set well back or well forward, aligners can tidy the teeth but can't change the skeleton, and you may need fixed braces with an orthodontist, sometimes alongside jaw surgery. We don't fit fixed braces at the practice, so if that is the right route we'll refer you and explain why.
Active gum disease has to be treated and settled first, because pushing teeth through inflamed, shrinking bone speeds up the damage. Decay needs filling too. Crowns and fillings are no barrier, but a dental implant is fused to bone and won't shift at all, so the plan works around it. Your examination, X-rays and scan show which of these applies before you commit to anything.
From First Visit to Final Aligner
- Consultation. It's free, with a £40 deposit that comes back to you within 7 days of attending. Dr Sharma checks your teeth, gums and bite and takes an iTero Lumina scan. It takes minutes, and there's no putty.
- Your simulation. You see a preview of how your teeth could finish, shown on a photo of your own face, then the planned movement stage by stage. Treat it as a target rather than a guarantee, because teeth don't all respond alike. 2
- A fixed fee. The amount of movement in the plan decides the package, and the price goes in writing before anything is ordered.
- Fitting. Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are bonded to a few teeth so the aligners have something to grip. Now and then a sliver of enamel is polished from between two teeth to make room.
- At home. You move on to the next aligner every one to two weeks.
- Reviews. Usually every six to eight weeks, to check each tooth is keeping pace.
- Fine-tuning and retainers. Extra aligners at the end, if you need them, are part of the package, and so are your Vivera retainers.
What an Ordinary Day Looks Like
The aligners come out for meals and for anything you drink apart from plain water. Brush, or at least rinse well, before they go back in, otherwise you're sealing food against your teeth for hours. Tea and coffee can stain the plastic and heat can distort it, so have them with the aligners out.
The first day or two of every new set feels firm, a bit like new shoes. That's the pressure that moves teeth, and it fades. Your speech may sound slightly different for a few days at the start. Keep the aligners in their case whenever they're out (most lost aligners end up wrapped in a napkin on a café tray), and clean them with a soft brush in cool water.
Many people find the routine curbs grazing between meals, simply because taking the aligners out is a bother.
How Long Will It Take?
Expect anything from around six months to a year and a half. A little crowding at the front, or teeth that have slipped since old braces, sits at the shorter end. Crowding across both arches, or bite correction, takes longer, typically a year or more. You'll know the planned number of aligners before you start.
Two things stretch the timeline. One is the amount of movement needed. The other is you: teeth only move while the aligners are in, and a few hours a day out of them soon adds up to weeks. Refinement aligners at the end may add a little time, and they're already in the fee.
Keeping the Result
Straightened teeth want to return to where they were, and all teeth drift gradually through life anyway. The fibres around each root need months to settle in their new position. That's why every package ends with Vivera retainers, made from a scan of your finished teeth. Most people wear them day and night for a short spell, then at night from then on. Our guide to retainers covers the detail.
Cost, and What Diamond Apex Means
Invisalign here runs from £2,500 for Express up to £5,000 for Comprehensive Plus, depending on how much your teeth need to move. 1 The fee covers scans, X-rays, every aligner, refinements, Vivera retainers, home whitening and a hygiene visit. The Invisalign cost guide compares all five packages. Invisalign isn't part of the dental plan discount.
The practice has been an Invisalign Diamond Apex provider every year from 2022 to 2026. Align Technology awards that tier for the number of Invisalign cases a practice treats, and it places us in the top 1% of providers in Europe by volume. It tells you we do a great deal of aligner work. It isn't a qualification, and it doesn't confer specialty status.
If you'd like your teeth whiter or reshaped afterwards, straightening first usually means less bonding or veneer work later. See smile makeovers.
