Who to Call, and When
Teeth rarely pick a convenient moment. Where to turn depends on the time of day and how serious it is.
| A weekday, while we're open | Phone us on 01698 767220 or book a same-day slot online. Calling early gives you the most choice of times. |
| Evenings and weekends | Call NHS 24 on 111. They assess you by phone, give advice and arrange urgent NHS dental care if it can't wait. |
| Breathing, swallowing, heavy bleeding or a facial injury | 999 or A&E, at any hour. This isn't one for a dental appointment. |
| Sore, but it can wait till morning | Painkillers and the first aid below, then ring us when we open at 9am. |
First Aid Before You Get Here
Simple things that make the wait easier, and in some cases save the tooth.
Adult Tooth Knocked Out
Pick it up by the white biting part, never the root. If it's dirty, dip it in milk for a second, slot it back in the gap and bite on a clean hanky. Can't get it in? Keep it in a cup of milk and get to a dentist within the hour. Baby teeth are never put back.
Toothache That Won't Let Up
Paracetamol or ibuprofen at the dose on the box, if they're safe for you, taken on time rather than once the pain peaks. Prop your head up in bed. Never hold an aspirin against the gum, as it burns.
A Swollen Gum or Cheek
Phone us as soon as we open. A cold pack wrapped in a tea towel helps; heat doesn't. Swelling creeping towards the eye or neck, or a struggle to swallow, means A&E.
A Broken Tooth or Filling
Save any fragment in milk. Rinse with warm water and press sugar-free gum or dental wax over a jagged edge. Chew on the other side. More on broken teeth
A Crown That's Come Off
Keep it in a clean bag and bring it with you, because it can often go back on. Don't use household glue. Temporary dental cement from a chemist will hold it for a day or two.
A Socket That Keeps Bleeding
Roll up gauze or a clean hanky, place it over the socket and bite hard for 20 minutes without checking. Sit upright. Still oozing after a second go? Ring us, or 111 if we're closed.
What Happens on the Day
The first job is getting you comfortable. The longer-term repair comes after, once you've had time to think.

Find Out What's Wrong
Your dentist asks what's been going on, examines the area and takes an X-ray if it's needed. You'll hear what's happening in plain words before anything is done.
Ease the Pain
Most people leave more comfortable than they arrived: a dressing, a temporary filling, draining an infection, removing an inflamed nerve or, if the tooth is beyond saving, taking it out.
Choices for the Lasting Fix
We set out the options and what each costs. Nothing more goes ahead until you've said yes, and you don't have to decide in the chair.
Problems We Treat Most Weeks
Not sure if yours counts as urgent? Phone and ask. We'd rather you checked.
Toothache and Abscesses
A deep throb, a swollen gum or a foul taste, usually from decay that's reached the nerve or a crack. Abscess advice
Chips, Cracks and Breaks
Anything from a rough corner to a back tooth that has split in two. Bring the piece if you found it. Broken tooth advice
Lost Fillings and Crowns
A crown that's still sound can usually be cemented back (£70). Otherwise we seal the tooth so it's protected until a new one is made.
Teeth Knocked Loose or Out
The quicker it's back in place, the better its chances. Follow the first aid above and come straight in.
Wisdom Teeth Flaring Up
Swollen gum at the back, a sore throat on one side and a jaw that won't open fully. Wisdom teeth
Dentures, Bridges and Implants
A snapped denture, a bridge that's come away or a loose implant crown. A locking or aching jaw? Jaw pain
When We're Closed
Our hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, and until 7.30pm on Thursdays. Closed at weekends. Outside those times, phone NHS 24 on 111. The call handler asks about your symptoms, gives advice and, if you need to be seen urgently, directs you to an out-of-hours NHS dental service.
If it can wait, painkillers and the first aid above usually see people through to the next weekday, when you can ring us at 9am. Members of our dental plans also have out-of-hours access through their plan.
Will Antibiotics Sort It?
Usually not, and that surprises a lot of people. Most toothache comes from an inflamed or dead nerve inside the tooth, or a crack, and tablets can't reach either.
We prescribe them when an infection is spreading or making you feel unwell, alongside treatment. The lasting answer is a filling, root canal treatment or an extraction.

One fee for the emergency visit. Any further work is priced in writing before it starts. Prices checked October 2026. 1

Your own dentist doesn't need to refer you, and being registered at another practice doesn't stop you booking with us.
