Root Canal Treatment in Hamilton
Keep the Tooth, Lose the Toothache
Root canal treatment in Hamilton costs from £450 for a front tooth to £595 for a molar, and usually takes one or two visits. 1 The infected nerve is removed from inside the tooth, the canals are disinfected and sealed, and you keep a tooth that would otherwise have to come out.
Dental plan members pay £405 to £536. 1 Root canal treatment is also available on the NHS: Children are registered and treated on the NHS straight away, and we are registering new NHS adults now.
What Actually Happens
It feels much like a long filling. The anaesthetic does the work.
Diagnosis
We test the tooth, take an X-ray and check whether it can be saved. You get the fee, and the option of taking it out instead, before we start.
Opening and Cleaning
With the tooth numb, a small opening is made in the top. The nerve tissue is lifted out and each canal is shaped and rinsed with disinfectant.
A Dressing, If Needed
A badly infected tooth gets a medicated dressing and a temporary filling for a week or two. Pain usually settles quickly once this is done.
Sealing and Rebuilding
The canals are filled to the tip and the top is sealed. A front tooth often just needs a filling; a back tooth is best protected with an onlay or crown.
Warning Signs
Some teeth give no trouble at all, and the infection only shows on an X-ray.
Swelling spreading towards your eye or neck, or trouble swallowing or breathing, needs A&E or 999 now. Out of hours, call NHS 24 on 111.
Save It or Take It Out?
Taking the tooth out is quicker and cheaper on the day. The catch is the gap it leaves: the teeth either side drift, the one above can drop, and filling the space later with a bridge or an implant costs more than the root canal would have.
So where the tooth can be saved and you want to keep it, that's usually what we advise. Where it can't, because it's split down the root or there's too little left to rebuild, we'll say so plainly rather than treat a tooth with a poor outlook.
Will It Work?
Most root-treated teeth settle and give years of service, often the rest of your life, provided the tooth is sealed well and properly rebuilt. The commonest reason for failure later is a crack or leaky filling letting bacteria back in, which is why back teeth need covering.
An old root filling that has flared up can often be redone, from £595. For curved or extra canals we may suggest a CT scan on our own scanner, which shows the roots in three dimensions.
Antibiotics won't cure an infected tooth. They have a place if infection is spreading, but the source still has to be dealt with.
Root Canal Prices
The fee depends on the tooth, because molars have three or four canals and incisors usually one. It's set in your written plan, and plan members pay 10% less. 1

The Days After
Who Does It
Root canals are carried out by our dentists, Dr Karanveer Singh and Dr Lee Min Ning, with digital X-rays taken during treatment to check each canal has been cleaned to its full length.
Very complex teeth, such as those with blocked canals or a broken instrument from earlier treatment, may be better with a dentist who limits their work to root canals. If that's the case for you, we'll tell you and arrange a referral.
