NHS Charges in Scotland
The Scottish Government sets these, not the practice, and they're the same at every NHS dentist in the country. You'll always know the cost before treatment begins.
| Examination | Free, whatever your age |
| Aged under 26 | Treatment free |
| Expecting a baby, or gave birth in the past year | No charge for treatment |
| Qualifying benefits, or holding an HC2 | No charge for treatment |
| HC3 certificate | Help towards the cost |
| Everyone else | 80% of the NHS cost, capped at £384 per course of treatment |
What a Course of Treatment Is
It's everything your dentist plans after one examination to get your mouth healthy: say, two fillings, a scale and polish and an extraction. The charge cap applies to that whole package, not to each item.
So an adult who pays NHS charges never pays more than £384 for a single course, however much is needed. If something new crops up months later, that becomes a new course with its own cap.
What the NHS Covers
Treatment you clinically need to make and keep your mouth healthy: examinations, X-rays, scaling, fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, crowns, bridges and dentures.
Treatment that's mainly about looks isn't included. That means composite bonding, whitening, veneers, Invisalign and, in almost all cases, dental implants. On the NHS, back teeth are often filled in amalgam (silver); tooth-coloured fillings are usually kept for the front.
NHS or private: how to chooseThe Private Option, Honestly
If you'd rather see us privately, here is what private care with us involves, good and bad.
What You Gain
Longer appointments and more choice. Every filling is tooth-coloured, and there's a wider choice of materials, such as ceramic crowns made from a digital scan rather than putty.
What It Costs
Your first private examination, X-rays included, is £70, and treatment is priced from our published fee list. You'll pay more than the NHS charge for most treatment, and there's no cap.
Spreading It Monthly
For £24.10 or £40.16 a month, our dental plans take care of your routine examinations and hygiene appointments. They suit some people well and won't save everyone money, so ask us to work it out for you.
You Can Mix the Two
Many people stay with the NHS for routine care and choose private for one particular thing, such as a crown in a different material or an implant. We'll always tell you which is which.
Keeping Your NHS Place
Seeing us privately for one treatment doesn't end your NHS registration. You can stay registered for routine care.
Where NHS Is the Better Fit
If you're under 26, pregnant or on qualifying benefits, NHS treatment is free, and we'd be the first to say so. Children are seen on the NHS here too.
Getting Registered
Children and adults are booked in straight away, with the private route open if you'd prefer it.

NHS Lanarkshire and Urgent Care
Our NHS dental services are overseen by NHS Lanarkshire, the health board for Hamilton and the rest of South and North Lanarkshire.
If you need urgent dental help while we're closed, call NHS 24 on 111. They can arrange an out-of-hours NHS appointment if it can't wait. In surgery hours, our same-day emergency appointments are open to anyone, registered or not.
Help with costs: the NHS Low Income Scheme (form HC1) can give you an HC2 or HC3 certificate if your income is low. We'll ask you to confirm any exemption before treatment.
