Invisalign or Braces?
Two ways of moving teeth, compared honestly: what each feels like to live with, the jobs each one does better, and how to work out which is right for you.
Should an Adult Choose Invisalign or Fixed Braces?
For the usual adult problems (crowding, gaps, a turned tooth or a mild bite issue) Invisalign does the job about as well as fixed braces, and it is far easier to live with because you can take it out. Fixed braces still win for big jaw-related bite problems and for anyone who won't keep aligners in 20 to 22 hours a day. In Hamilton, a free consultation and iTero scan with Dr Nikhil Sharma will show which fits your teeth, and if braces are better we'll refer you to an orthodontist.
Same Biology, Different Tools
Every method of straightening works the same way underneath. A steady, gentle push on a tooth makes the bone on one side give way and new bone fill in on the other, so the tooth travels a fraction of a millimetre at a time. What differs is how the push is delivered.
Fixed braces are small brackets glued to each tooth and linked by a wire. The wire is adjusted or swapped at each appointment, and the teeth follow it. Because they can't come out, they work around the clock with no effort from you.
Invisalign is a series of clear plastic trays, each a touch different from the last, that you change every week or two. Little tooth-coloured attachments bonded to some teeth give the plastic a handle to push on. The whole sequence is planned on a computer from an iTero scan, so you see the expected finish before you begin.
Living with Each, Compared
| Feature | Invisalign | Fixed braces |
|---|---|---|
| How it looks | Clear, hard to spot | Brackets and wire on show |
| Food | Trays out, eat normally | Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods |
| Brushing and flossing | As usual | Slower, with special brushes |
| Mouth comfort | Smooth edges | Brackets can rub lips and cheeks |
| Breakages | Rare | Loose brackets, poking wires |
| Who keeps it working | You, by wearing it | The appliance, all day |
| Severe jaw problems | Limited | Usually the better option |
For a typical adult case the finished result can be much the same. The choice usually turns on how much each of those rows matters to you.
Not Sure Which Route Is Yours?
A free scan and simulation will show what aligners could do.
Where Invisalign Is Stronger
- Appearance. Colleagues, clients and wedding photos rarely notice clear aligners.
- Eating. Nothing is banned, because the trays come out. You just brush before they go back.
- Cleaning. Your normal routine carries on, which matters for adults with crowns, fillings or gums that need care.
- Fewer emergencies. No snapped wires or brackets to re-glue.
- A preview first. You see the planned result before you pay for anything.
- Relapse. Teeth that have slipped since teenage braces are often a short, inexpensive Express or Lite case.
Where Braces Are Stronger
When the real problem is the jaw, rather than the teeth, fixed braces are generally the right starting point, sometimes combined with jaw surgery. They also manage certain movements more predictably: turning a badly rotated canine, pulling a tooth down into line or pushing one up into the bone, and closing a large space left after an extraction.
Then there's the human factor. Aligners only work while they're in. If you already know you'd leave them on the bedside table, braces are the more honest choice because they don't rely on willpower.
Fixed braces aren't fitted at this practice. Where they'd give you a better result, we'll explain why and refer you to an orthodontist. Starting aligners on a case they can't finish well helps nobody.
Comfort and Day-to-Day Life
With aligners, the main sensation is pressure for a day or two each time you change to a new tray. People describe it as tight rather than painful. Your speech may be a little different for the first few days.
Braces tend to be sore in the first weeks while the inside of your lips toughens up, and again after each adjustment. Food catches in the wires, and you'll get used to carrying interdental brushes. Plaque left sitting around brackets can leave pale marks on the enamel once they're removed, so cleaning has to be thorough.
With either, keep your hygiene appointments. Airflow cleaning gets gently around attachments and brackets where a brush struggles.
How Long and How Much
For cases that suit both, treatment time is broadly similar. Small corrections take a few months; bigger ones typically take a year to eighteen months. The difference is that braces keep working on lazy days, while aligners only keep to schedule if you wear them 20 to 22 hours a day.
Invisalign here costs from £2,500 for Express to £5,000 for Comprehensive Plus, and the fee covers your scans and X-rays, every aligner, refinements, Vivera retainers, home whitening and a hygiene visit. 1 The Invisalign cost guide explains which package suits which teeth. If you're comparing with a braces quote, ask whether retainers, adjustment visits and repairs are in the price.
Since 2022 to 2026, the practice has held Invisalign Diamond Apex status each year. That tier reflects the number of cases treated (the top 1% of providers in Europe by volume), not a qualification, but it does mean aligners are something we do a lot of.
Both End with Retainers
Whichever you choose, teeth try to move back afterwards, so you'll need retainers: full time to begin with, then at night for the long term. After braces that's often a removable retainer, a thin bonded wire behind the front teeth, or both. After Invisalign here, Vivera retainers are included. Our retainers guide explains the routine.
Retainers are a lifelong habit, so it's worth thinking about which you'd find easier. A removable retainer is a nightly routine you have to remember. A bonded wire needs no remembering, but it's slower to floss around and can loosen without you noticing.
How to Decide
Start with the facts about your own mouth. Book a free consultation in Hamilton, have your teeth and gums checked and your iTero Lumina scan taken, and look at the simulation. That tells you whether aligners can reach a good result for you and roughly which package it would be.
Then be honest about your habits. If you snack all day, travel a lot or know you'd lose trays, say so. We'd rather point you towards braces with an orthodontist than start aligners you won't keep in. Patients come to us from Bothwell, Blantyre and East Kilbride as well as Hamilton itself, and the reviews every six to eight weeks are short.
Questions
This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. A dentist needs to examine you to say what is right for your teeth.
