Tooth Extractions, Hamilton
Taking Teeth Out, Gently and with a Plan
A simple extraction at our Hamilton practice costs £125, and a wisdom tooth or surgical extraction is £450. Most are done under local anaesthetic in well under an hour, and IV sedation is there if nerves would otherwise keep you away. Before anything comes out, we'll tell you honestly whether the tooth could be kept.
IV sedation £500 a session. Extraction with a collagen dressing and stitches £220. In pain? We aim to see you the same day. 1
When We'd Advise Taking It Out
Keeping a tooth is nearly always our first aim. These are the cases where removing it tends to be the kinder choice.
Split or Crumbled to the Gum
If a crack runs down into the root, or too little tooth is left above the gum to hold a crown, no repair will last.
Infection That Keeps Coming Back
An abscess that returns after root canal treatment, or a root-filled tooth that has failed more than once.
Loosened by Gum Disease
Once most of the bone holding a root has gone, the tooth moves and can't be firmed up again.
Troublesome Wisdom Teeth
Lower wisdom teeth jammed against the molar in front, half through with the gum flaring up, or decayed because no brush reaches them.
Room for Straightening
Now and then a brace or aligner plan needs space that only removing a tooth will give.
Stubborn Baby Teeth
A milk tooth that hasn't loosened when the adult tooth underneath is ready to come through.
Simple or Surgical?
You'll know which yours is before the day, because we go through the X-ray with you.
On the Day, Step by Step
X-Rays, and a Scan If Needed
A small X-ray shows the shape of the roots. If a lower wisdom tooth sits near the nerve that gives feeling to your lip, a CT scan on our own scanner in Hamilton maps the distance between them in 3D.
Getting Numb
We wait until the area is fully numb. You'll feel pushing and pressure, not sharp pain. With sedation, the sedative goes in first through a small cannula, and most people recall very little afterwards.
Removing the Tooth
A simple extraction is quick. A surgical one takes longer, and we tell you what you'll feel before each part.
Before You Go Home
You bite on gauze until the bleeding settles, then leave with written aftercare and a number to message if anything worries you.
Wisdom Teeth: Leave or Remove?
Plenty of wisdom teeth never need treatment. If yours are fully through, easy to clean and causing no trouble, we leave them be and keep an eye on them at dental examinations. Taking out healthy wisdom teeth just in case isn't recommended in the UK.
We'd suggest removal when a wisdom tooth keeps triggering gum infections (pericoronitis), has decay that can't sensibly be filled, or is damaging the molar in front. Upper ones are usually more straightforward than lower ones.
With lower wisdom teeth, the main risks are a dry socket and, less often, a numb lip or tongue from bruising of a nearby nerve, which usually recovers. We talk through your own risk on the scan before you decide. If you're travelling in from East Kilbride or Motherwell for a sedation visit, you'll need someone to drive you home.
Healing at Home
Planning What Fills the Gap
A gap far back in the mouth doesn't always need filling. Over time, though, the teeth either side can tip into the space, the opposing tooth can drop down, and the jawbone shrinks, most of it within the first few months. If the tooth is going to be replaced, it's worth deciding before it comes out.
For a front tooth, a temporary denture (£495) or a resin-retained bridge (£675 per unit) means you never walk out with a gap. For a longer-term fix, a dental implant can go into the healed socket a few months later, or sometimes on the same day as the extraction.
If You're Thinking of an Implant
Dr Nikhil Sharma plans every implant on a CT scan taken here, so he can judge whether the bone will take an implant straight away or needs time to heal first. The consultation is free, with a £40 deposit refunded within 7 days of attending.
