A well-looked-after implant can last for decades, and for many people it stays in for life. The crown on top is a different matter: it takes the daily wear of chewing and may need remaking at some point. What shortens an implant's life is mostly within your control, chiefly smoking, infection of the gum around it, and skipping the hygiene visits that catch problems early. Grinding can chip or loosen the crown, which is why we often suggest a night guard.

Brush it twice a day and clean around it daily with an interdental brush sized for the gap, just as you would a natural tooth, including under any implant bridge. A water flosser helps if you find small brushes fiddly. The gum around an implant can become inflamed (peri-implantitis), and if that goes unnoticed it can quietly cost bone. Hygiene visits with Simra, our hygienist, let us check and clean the area properly, and Airflow is gentle on implant surfaces. If you clench or grind, a night guard (£210) protects the crown from chipping.
