Composite Bonding
The fees and what sits inside them, how a bonded tooth is built, how long it lasts, how our prices compare across Lanarkshire, and when we'd point you towards something else.
How Much Does Composite Bonding Cost in Hamilton?
Composite bonding at Hamilton Smile Studios is £395 a tooth. Packages cost £1,550 for four teeth, £2,350 for six, £3,150 for eight and £3,950 for ten, and each one includes home whitening, a review visit and a final polish. Dr Nikhil Sharma does the bonding himself, usually in one or two visits with little or no drilling, after a free consultation.
The Fees, in Plain Figures
| Package | Which teeth | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Single tooth | One chipped corner, a worn edge or one small gap | £395 |
| Four teeth | Upper central and lateral incisors | £1,550 |
| Six teeth | Incisors plus both canines | £2,350 |
| Eight teeth | As far back as the first premolars | £3,150 |
| Ten teeth | Through to the second premolars, for a wide smile | £3,950 |
Every package comes with Boutique home whitening, a dental examination of the finished work about a fortnight later and a last polish. Edge bonding and full composite veneers cost the same per tooth. 1 You get the figure in a written plan before we start, and it stays fixed.
Bonding sits outside the dental plan discount, so members and non-members pay the same.
What the Lanarkshire Price Gap Buys
Around Lanarkshire, practices advertise bonding at roughly £100 to £200 a tooth. Our single-tooth fee is higher than that, so it's fair to ask why. Some of the gap is real, and some of it is in what the advertised figure leaves out.
- Many advertised figures are starting prices. They often cover a small edge repair. Full build-ups and composite veneers over the whole face of a tooth take far longer, and are usually listed higher wherever you go.
- Whitening is usually extra elsewhere. Ours is in every package, and on its own it's £350. Take that out and four teeth work out at £300 a tooth for the bonding.
- Layering takes time. Building a tooth in several shades and translucencies, so the edge looks see-through like real enamel, takes longer in the chair than a single-shade build-up.
- The follow-up is included. The review, the bite check and the final polish are part of the fee, not separate appointments.
A lower price isn't automatically worse work. If all you need is one small chip tidied, a simple single-shade repair can be perfectly good, and we'll say so. Whoever you see, ask what the price includes, how many shades they layer, who does the work and what happens if a corner chips.

A dentist will look at it and tell you honestly whether bonding is worth doing, and roughly what it would cost.
What Bonding Actually Is
Bonding is tooth-coloured composite resin added to the outside of a tooth. The surface is cleaned and primed so the resin grips, then the dentist builds the shape up a layer at a time and hardens each one with a blue curing light. When the shape is right, it's contoured and polished until it reflects light like the teeth beside it.
There are two forms. Edge bonding adds a little to corners and biting edges. A composite veneer covers the whole front of the tooth, which lets us change both shape and colour. Because composite is added rather than drilled away, most of your enamel stays where it is. Now and then a fraction is smoothed so the join is invisible, and Dr Sharma will tell you at the consultation if your teeth need that.
Teeth It Suits, and Teeth It Doesn't
Bonding does well with modest changes on healthy teeth:
- Front teeth chipped by a fall, a fork or a sports knock
- Edges worn short and flat over the years
- A small gap between the two front teeth
- A narrow or peg-shaped tooth beside normal ones
- White marks or patches on the enamel
- Old bonding that has yellowed or never looked right
It's a poor fit for crowded teeth, because composite adds bulk and can't move anything. Those usually look better straightened first. Heavy grinders chip composite edges, so we'd plan a night guard or look at porcelain. Any decay or gum inflammation is treated first, because bonding on an unhealthy tooth doesn't last.
From First Visit to Final Polish
- Consultation with Dr Sharma. Photographs, a look at your bite and a chat about the shape you're after. For bigger cases there's a digital design, and a trial smile can be tried over your teeth so you see the shape first. The consultation is free; you pay a £40 deposit when booking, and it comes back within 7 days of your visit.
- Whitening at home. Custom trays made from an iTero Lumina scan, worn for two to three weeks. We then leave about a fortnight for the colour to settle before matching composite to it.
- The bonding visit. One longer appointment for most cases, two for some veneer sets. The teeth are kept dry and isolated while each layer goes on, and most people need no numbing at all.
- Review. Around two weeks later we check how your teeth meet, adjust anything high and give everything a final polish.
How Long It Lasts
On average, three to five years before it needs freshening up, and plenty of bonding goes longer. What shortens it is predictable: grinding at night, biting nails or pens, smoking, and a lot of coffee, tea or red wine. Composite picks up stain more readily than porcelain, though a polish at your hygiene visits removes most of it.
When a corner chips, it can usually be built back in one short appointment without redoing the tooth. A refresh is normally a polish or a new outer layer rather than starting from scratch. If you grind, a night guard (£210) protects the edges while you sleep.
When Porcelain or Invisalign Fits Better
| Feature | Porcelain veneers | Composite bonding |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling | A thin shell of enamel taken off, for good | Usually none, or a polish of the surface |
| Appointments | Three, with a trial smile | One, sometimes two |
| Expected life | Commonly 10 to 15 years, often more | Around 3 to 5 years before a refresh |
| Colour over time | Holds its colour very well | Picks up some stain; polishes back |
| After a chip | Normally replaced | Normally patched in one visit |
| Fee per tooth | From £695 | £395 |
Porcelain suits a big, long-term change across several teeth, or teeth that are very dark or heavily filled. If your teeth overlap or lean, Invisalign first often means far less composite, or none. Our guide on porcelain and composite veneers goes further.
