NHS Dentists in Hamilton
Where NHS places stand at our practice, how registration works in Scotland, what NHS treatment costs and who pays nothing, what to do in an emergency, and what private care costs if you'd prefer it.
Can I Get an NHS Dentist in Hamilton?
Yes. We are registering children and adults on the NHS in Hamilton now, with no waiting list. If you'd rather be seen privately, a new patient examination is £70. NHS examinations are free for everyone in Scotland, and adults who pay for NHS treatment pay 80% of the fee, never more than £384 for a course of treatment.
The Honest Answer
Children are registered and treated on the NHS straight away, and we are registering new NHS adults now.
That's the position at our practice on 20–22 Brandon Street, in Hamilton town centre, today. We'd rather tell you plainly than have you book in expecting something we can't offer. Children and adults are registered on the NHS as soon as you ask, and NHS places can fill up, so if you've been meaning to register, now is a good time. Private care is there too if you'd prefer longer appointments and a wider choice of materials.
Registering with an NHS Dentist in Scotland
In Scotland you register with a dental practice rather than being allocated one. Any practice with NHS space can take you; there's no requirement to live in a particular postcode. Once a practice registers you, it becomes your NHS dentist for dental examinations and treatment. In our part of South Lanarkshire, NHS dental services are overseen by NHS Lanarkshire.
Once you're registered, it continues unless you or the practice end it. You can only be registered with one NHS practice at a time, so joining a new one moves your registration across. If you've been with a practice in the past but haven't been in for years, it's worth phoning them first; you may still be on their list.
If you're searching more widely, the dental listings on NHS inform show practices across Lanarkshire, and NHS Lanarkshire can advise if you're struggling to find one taking adults.

Registering a Child with Us
Children are registered and treated on the NHS straight away. To register, ask for a call back and choose NHS place, or send us a WhatsApp message. We'll book the first examination, ideally soon after the first teeth come through and certainly by the first birthday.
Children in Scotland pay nothing for NHS dental care, dental examinations or treatment. Scotland's Childsmile programme also means NHS practices can give tooth-brushing advice and, from age two, fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel. Bring your child's CHI number if you know it, and any questions you have about teething, thumb-sucking or diet. Our children's dentist guide covers what the first visits are like.
Adults: NHS or Private
To register as an NHS adult, use the same call back form or WhatsApp. We take your details and book your first NHS examination, which is free in Scotland. There's no fee to register.
If you'd rather see us privately, you can book a private new patient examination at £70, which includes the X-rays you need, or join one of our dental plans. Being seen privately for one treatment doesn't remove you from our NHS list.
What NHS Treatment Costs in Scotland
NHS dental examinations are free for every adult and child in Scotland. For treatment, such as fillings, scaling, root canals, extractions, crowns or dentures, the fees are set nationally by the Scottish Government, so they're the same at every practice.
If you pay, you pay 80% of the NHS fee, and the total for one course of treatment is capped at £384. A course of treatment means everything your dentist plans after an examination, so the cap applies to the whole plan, not to each visit. Your dentist must tell you the cost before treatment starts.
Who Pays Nothing
| You pay nothing for NHS treatment if you are | What to bring |
|---|---|
| Under 26 | Nothing extra; we record your date of birth |
| Expecting a baby, or gave birth within the past year | Confirmation of your due date or your baby's birth |
| Receiving certain means-tested benefits | Your current benefit award letter |
| Holding an HC2 certificate from the NHS Low Income Scheme | The certificate |
An HC3 certificate gives partial help, so you pay a reduced amount. Benefit rules change, so if you're unsure whether you qualify, ask us before treatment and we'll check, or look at the help with health costs pages on NHS inform. Claiming free treatment when you don't qualify can lead to a penalty charge, so it's worth getting right.
In Pain and Not Registered Anywhere?
- While we're open, phone 01698 767220. Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, and until 7.30pm on Thursdays. Closed at weekends. We see people who aren't registered with us for private emergency appointments at £70, and we'll tell you the cost of any treatment before we start.
- When we're closed, call NHS 24 on 111. They can give advice and, if needed, arrange an urgent NHS appointment.
- Swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or vision, or bleeding you can't stop, is a medical emergency: call 999 or go to A&E.
