Is a Dental Plan Worth It?
The sums behind both plans, the extras members get, the costs a plan won't cover, and the people who'd be better off paying as they go.
Is a Dental Plan Worth Paying for in Hamilton?
Usually yes, if you see the dentist and the hygienist twice a year. Plan A at Hamilton Smile Studios is £24.10 a month, which is £289.20 a year for care that would cost £360 paid visit by visit, a saving of £70.80. Plan B is £40.16 a month with four hygiene visits instead of two, saving £78.08 a year. For someone who only visits annually, a plan costs more than it saves.
The Sums, Plainly
| Feature | Plan A | Plan B |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | £24.10 | £40.16 |
| Over a year | £289.20 | £481.92 |
| Examinations | 2 | 2 |
| Small X-rays | 2 | 2 |
| 30-minute hygiene visits with Airflow | 2 | 4 |
| Same care, paid as you go | £360 | £560 |
| Yearly saving | £70.80 | £78.08 |
Those figures use our current fees: £70 for an examination, £10 for a small X-ray and £100 for a hygiene visit with Airflow. 1 They leave out the member discount and free emergency appointments, which is where most of a plan's value tends to show up.
Where the Real Value Is
On routine care alone, the saving is real but modest. A plan pays for itself more convincingly the first time something goes wrong.
- An emergency appointment, normally £70, is free for members.
- A molar root canal is £536 instead of £595.
- A crown on a back tooth is from £608 instead of £675.
- A 60-minute deep clean is £117 instead of £130.
- Home whitening is £315 instead of £350, and a night guard £189 instead of £210.
One unexpected root canal or crown in a year can save you as much again as the routine care does. Every member price is listed on our fees page.
Not Sure Which Plan Fits?
Book an examination and your dentist will recommend one.
Plan A or Plan B?
The only difference is how often you see the hygienist. Both include your two examinations and two small X-rays a year.
Plan A is for healthy teeth and gums: an examination plus a clean with the hygienist twice a year, which is the normal rhythm for a mouth that's in good shape.
Plan B puts you with the hygienist every three months. It's the one we'd suggest if you've had gum disease, build up tartar quickly, or have implants or a full-arch bridge, because plaque around gums and implants is what causes trouble and three-monthly cleaning keeps it down. Our implant guarantee is a 5-year guarantee for non-smokers who attend hygiene visits every 3 months, so Plan B is the obvious fit once implant treatment is complete. The gum disease guide explains why the gap between visits matters.
Hygiene visits are with our hygienist, Simra Ashraf, and every one includes Airflow, which blasts away stain and soft deposits with warm water, air and a very fine powder. We book the next visit before you leave.

What a Plan Doesn't Cover
It's worth being clear about the limits before you sign up.
- Implants, Invisalign, composite bonding and veneers aren't discounted. The 10% excludes implants, orthodontics and extensive cosmetic treatment. Whitening on its own is the exception.
- Larger imaging, such as a large X-ray or a CT scan, is charged at the member price: a CT scan is £144 instead of £160.
- Longer hygiene appointments, like a deep clean or a course of gum treatment at £90 a stage, are extra at the member rate.
- Treatment, such as fillings, crowns or root canal, is paid for when it's done, at 10% off, with the fee given to you in writing first.
A plan covers prevention and gives you a discount on repair. It isn't insurance, and it doesn't put a ceiling on what you might spend in a year when a lot needs doing.
When Paying as You Go Wins
Not everyone is better off on a plan. Take a patient who books one dental examination and one Airflow clean each year. They'd pay £170 in total, well under a year of Plan A at £289.20. Two examinations and two standard hygiene visits without Airflow come to £280, close to the Plan A fee before counting the X-rays, emergency cover and discount.
Children and young adults don't need one either, because NHS dental examinations and treatment are free for under-26s in Scotland. Adults here don't pay for an NHS dental examination either. At this practice: Children are registered and treated on the NHS straight away, and we are registering new NHS adults now. Our NHS or private guide compares the two routes.
How Our Plans Compare Locally
When we looked at practice websites around Lanarkshire in October 2026, dental plans were mostly advertised at about £16 to £28 a month. Plan A sits within that range. Plan B costs more than most, because it includes four Airflow hygiene visits a year rather than one or two.
Monthly prices only tell you so much. Before you compare, check how many hygiene visits a plan includes and how long each one is, whether X-rays are covered, whether emergency appointments are free or only discounted, and what the discount on treatment excludes.
Three Examples
A healthy mouth, seen twice a year. Someone in Udston or Earnock with sound teeth who comes in twice a year for an examination and a clean is the person Plan A is built for. They save £70.80 on routine care, and an unexpected emergency visit costs them nothing.
Gums that need watching. A patient who has finished a course of gum treatment usually needs the hygienist every three months to keep the pockets from deepening. On Plan B those four visits are covered, saving £78.08 a year compared with booking each one.
An occasional visitor. Someone who comes in once a year and rarely needs treatment will usually spend less paying on the day. We'd rather tell you that than sign you up for a plan you won't use.
Joining
If you're new to the practice, start by booking an examination. Your dentist will look at your teeth and gums, see how quickly plaque and tartar build up, and recommend Plan A or Plan B. You can then sign up online from our dental plans page.

This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. A dentist needs to examine you to say what is right for your teeth.
