Whitening: Cost and Value
What the fee covers, how it compares with what Lanarkshire practices charge, when a hygiene visit is all you need, and what decides how white your teeth will go.
What Does Teeth Whitening Cost in Hamilton, and Is It Good Value?
Boutique home whitening at Hamilton Smile Studios is £350, or £315 on a dental plan, and it comes free with every Invisalign and bonding package. The fee pays for an examination, trays made to fit your teeth, professional-strength gel and a follow-up check, and you keep the trays. If you want your own teeth lighter, it's worth it: it's the only legal way to change their colour, and results usually last over a year.
The Fee and What Sits Inside It
There's one whitening fee at our Hamilton practice: £350, or £315 if you're on one of our dental plans. 1 It isn't a starting price with extras added later. It covers:
- An examination of your teeth and gums, so decay, cracks or gum problems are dealt with first
- An iTero Lumina scan, with no putty
- Custom trays made from that scan, which keep gel on the teeth and off the gums
- Professional Boutique gel, prescribed by your dentist
- A record of your starting shade
- A review to see the result and talk about keeping it
You take the trays home for good. Extra gel for top-ups is sold at reception, and the team can tell you today's price.
When It Costs Nothing Extra
| If you're having | Whitening |
|---|---|
| Any Invisalign package, from £2,500 | Included |
| Any bonding package, from £1,550 for four teeth | Included |
| Whitening on its own | £350 |
| Whitening on its own, plan member | £315 |
With bonding, it's there for a practical reason: composite is colour-matched on the day and can't be lightened later, so whitening goes first and the bonding is made to the new shade. With Invisalign, it's the finishing touch once the teeth are straight. More on that in whitening before bonding.

How the Price Compares Locally
Across Lanarkshire, practices advertise whitening from about £295 to £450, with some in-chair systems priced up to around £650. At the time of writing, our fee sits inside that range. When you compare quotes, ask whether the examination, both arches and a review are part of the price. In-chair whitening tends to cause more sensitivity, and a well-run home course usually ends up at a similar shade.
What you shouldn't compare it with is a salon or kiosk offer. Whitening by anyone who isn't a registered dental professional is illegal in the UK, and what they use may be either ineffective or banned outright.
Do You Need Whitening at All?
Not always. When the dullness is mostly surface marks from cigarettes or years of strong tea, a clean with Airflow (£100) can do a lot, and a whitening toothpaste a couple of times a week helps in between. Neither changes the colour of the tooth itself, but it's worth trying first if you haven't had a clean in a while.
Teeth that are yellow right through are different: only peroxide whitening changes that inner colour. Over-the-counter strips and pens are limited by law to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, which mostly shifts surface stain. A dentist can prescribe gel up to 6%, in trays made for your teeth, after checking it's safe for you. Of all the cosmetic options, it's the gentlest, since the tooth itself isn't built up or drilled.
What Decides How White You'll Go
- Where you start. Yellow tones respond best. Grey or brown staining is slower, and one tooth that darkened after a knock may need something else.
- What's already in your mouth. Crowns, veneers, fillings and bonding won't change.
- Wearing the trays as advised. Missed nights stretch the course out.
- How your teeth react. If they're tender, shorter sessions or the odd night off slow progress a little without stopping it.
- Habits afterwards. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking bring the stain back sooner.
Results vary from one person to the next. 2 We show you a realistic target shade before you start, and we'll be straight with you if another treatment would suit your teeth better.
Is It Worth It Over Time?
A whitening result usually holds for a year or more, sometimes several, depending on diet and smoking. Keeping the trays means the colour can be revived with a little gel rather than a full new course, and regular cleans stop surface marks piling up. Divided across the time it lasts, it's one of the smaller cosmetic costs for a change most people notice. See keeping your teeth white for habits that stretch it further.
What It Won't Change
Whitening alters colour only. Chips, gaps and crowding need bonding or Invisalign, both of which include whitening. Fillings, bonding and crowns on front teeth keep their shade, so we'll tell you at the consultation whether any are likely to stand out afterwards; replacing them is priced separately.
Whitening must be prescribed by a dentist in the UK. Below the age of 18, gels stronger than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide are only permitted to treat or prevent disease, which rules out cosmetic whitening for teenagers. We also don't whiten during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
